Good question, I'm baffled.
I just installed a fresh VBox VM from the OI text install DVD ISO.
<URL:https://www.openindiana.org/download/>
Then 
# pkg update
# pkg install virtualbox-additions mate_install
# init 6
# svcadm enable lightdm
and it worked with some errors and warnings in .xsession-errors
