Volunteers are welcome to change that!
Open Indiana is an open source OS without any commercial support. We are
only a very few (read < 10) people actively maintaining it. We all have
our day jobs, typically
unrelated to OI or illumos (exceptions exist). The common basis,
illumos, is of course mostly developed by companies. But they are mostly
focused on doing things for
their customers. Desktop systems are not being used there, as far as I know.

So, instead of telling us what we should fix for you, you should start
fixing things for yourself. That's what we are doing for us and that's
how community projects should work.
Our repositories are all openly accessible. We also have some
documentation on how to get started. So you can start immediately.
And if your are not able to install OI on your bare metal you can run it
on most hypervisors, eg. I am running one "build machine" on Proxmox.
