It's good news that you solved the problem.

Can you please submit the hardware components to the HCL (OpenIndiana Hardware Compatibility List) ?

Perhaps also with some BIOS info in the "Notes and/or specific usage instructions";
there are several systems and components with specific BIOS suggestions/hints ...

In my case with the i3-10100 and Dell BIOS, when I press F12 to go into the "One-time boot menu" and BIOS setup,
there is a Settings -> Video and it has two menus :

   1) Multi-Display
   2) Primary Display

Under 2) Primary Display there is a choice

   1) Auto
   2) Intel HD
   3) NVIDIA HD

That selects the video card for the BIOS although it seems that both cards are always presented to the OpenIndiana OS.

As far as I understand your case (without integrated graphics),
you always had a possibility to see the BIOS settings on your NVIDIA card,
it was only the X11/lightdm at the OpenIndiana level that had an issue.

In other words, the BIOS was always sort of using the NVIDIA card as its "primary display".
