Unlike SATA & SAS, NVME storage usually plugs directly into PCIe lanes
without a separate controller in the middle and so you don't have as
many different drivers to contend with.

I recently built a new system (with an AMD EPYC 8004-series cpu in a
Tyan S8040 motherboard) that boots from a pool on a pair of NVME devices
installed into the motherboard's M.2 connectors.

Installing OI from a usb stick was straightforward.
