CUPS has the file backend.
It needs to be enabled in the config file.
You *might* be able to write to the /dev/usb...
I often used the file backend for testing... generate the printer
specific PCL and then cat or ncat to printer.
Modern IPP seems to be making that less necessary and modern CUPS
seems to be making that less possible.
