[OpenIndiana-discuss] [oi-dev] [discuss] Making OI friendly to new users

A bit more to the story

Faced with having to report a bug on Windows OR Linux OR FreeBSD, the brain deadness of not having an "Other" option did not sit well. Being told it was *not their fault* that autoconf didn't work was a bit much. The autoconf people rightly said, "It's the author's problem". I have to agree with the autoconf people on that.

I use Octave infrequently and with many OS options just used whatever Octave ran on. It's created a lot of confusion on where work resides that I'm trying to correct. Hence the current effort with Octave.

FWIW Everywhere I worked I was the "goto guy" for system, compiler and linker issues. If the autoconf will actually generate a Makefile I can fix any of those. Errors generated by autoconf not being able to *generate* a Makefile is too tedious.

Have Fun!

I usually get better results from a neutrally-worded bug report that includes
a patch that addresses the issue than I get from ranting, but "you do you"
as the saying goes.  octave's bugtracker now has a category for
"Sunos/Solaris", so your ranting may very well have brought that about.

The two minor compile issues I mentioned have been reported to upstream,
and I've provided easy patches for both:
