In this case you should make yourself familiar with OpenIndiana, e.g. by
starting to read its documentation:
https://docs.openindiana.org/handbook/getting-started/
illumos based operating systems have some things inherited from Solaris
that you cannot find elsewhere,
eg. the modular debugger (mdb). A glimpse of that you can find in the
illumos books: https://illumos.org/books/

When you are willing to contribute to OI you can start building packages
on you own system. An introduction can be found at
https://docs.openindiana.org/dev/userland/

Feel free to use the mailing list or IRC to ask for help and further
information.
