When it is about cheap or * right price * I would start from the printing technology, then
I would check for cups compatibility or unix support from its web page.
I owned a inkjet Brother recently, great machines obviously, Unix compatible but much
expencive to mantain (a cartridge give away prb mainly).
Staying on laser - but not color lasers like you suggest - I must reccomend to investigate
about the * led laser printing technology *. I own one of them (but bought in China) and its black pawder
refill maintenance is completely unexpensive.
Then, again, found the machine check if it is Unix compatible.
