I wished I could reproduce the described core_dump_after_exit_scenario here locally.
But whatever, I will look into your patch over the next days and then decide if we should add it no matter what (same encouragement to all other readers who read this).

After somebody tests if calling the .exe directly helps, we know more.
And request to all who ran through this glitch: Please the core file.

As mentioned earlier: These few core dumps I got happened on my old system with the well known FF37 port http://opensxce.org/.FF/37/i386/
And only during cleanup at post-exit time.
So I would not call it a crash if something exists abnormally __after__ an user-initiated normal exit.
Maybe some free() stuff acessing invalid memory, which only get called during a normal exit()? And then only on specific environments?
Mhh. It is a pity. But this doesn't make it much less usable. However - of course we must fix it asap.

I don't think that __you__ owe me anything. Ahh, no, really not. 
But it is a very friendly sign and more than helpful at the same time.
