If you want to get a jump on the process, you can start by building your
own images. I wanted to do the same thing, hence my question to the
mailing list a few weeks ago about distribution constructor.

You can find the documentation for distribution-constructor at

 	http://docs.openindiana.org/

in the

Handbook -> Developer's Corner -> Using distribution constructor

section.

As the docs say, it is pretty straightforward.

There are a few things that the docs don't cover, that someone new to the
process (like I was) might wonder about. I plan to update the docs with
this info, but for people new to the process:

- by default, all the XML config files are configured to build an image
with the latest packages published to the repo, so if you build an image
you get the latest of everything (again, by default), *not* a copy of e.g.
2020.10. You *can* modify the config in the XML to lock incorporations
at a particular version, if you want.

- it fetches fresh packages from the openindiana.org publisher (it doesn't
try use your locally-installed packages as a "cache"), so it requires
several gigabytes of disk space and a lengthy download process.
Depending on network bandwidth, it can take quite a while to download.

On a related note, I don't think there is a (public) mirror of the
   openindiana.org publisher in North America.

- it will create zfs mounts (by default) for its work and output area.
