Hi All,

So, it's t-minus 11 days now until the launch! Hooray!

So there's obviously lots to be done - I thought it would be helpful to enumerate this here. I'll also get this put up onto the wiki.

1. Rebranding Work

This is critical for the release, so we don't infringe Sun/Oracle trademarks. It involves stripping out Sun/Oracle/OpenSolaris branding/icons/logos/etc. Below I've put down who is (roughly speaking) working on what (If I've put you down as working on something, and you're not actually working on it, please let me know ASAP).

Nora (schottkey on IRC) has said she should be able to help produce the graphics needed. Due to the tight timescale, I think for this release we should stick with the temporary "OpenIndiana" text logo in blue/grey. This can be replaced at a later date with a proper final logo. But I don't think we have time to wait for this, nor should we rush it.

ONNV - Done (by me). Consists of two patches, one to change the kernel boot message and one to change the COMSTAR vendor ID.

JDS - In progress by Guido Berhoerster (gber on IRC). Mostly complete, awaiting replacement graphics.

Caiman Installer - In progress by me. 40% complete. Also require replacement graphics.

solaris_re - In progress by Frederik (storkone on IRC). Mostly complete.

XNV - In progress by Julian Wiesener (yofuh on IRC). Just started, but minimal work needed.

IPS - no branding needed.

SFW - Unknown what rebranding is needed, if any. Probably minimal. Could do with someone to pick this up and investigate.

VPanels - Unknown
g11n - Unknown

2. Building the Consolidations

ONNV - Alasdair (Me)
SFW - TBC
JDS - Guido Berhoerster (gber) hopefully!
Caiman - Alasdair (Me)
Solaris_re Frederik (storkone)
XNV - Julian Wiesener (yofuh)
IPS - Andrzej Szeszo (aszeszo)
vpanels - TBC (Required!)
g11n - TBC (Required!)

If someone could step forward to look after the TBC consolidations, that would be very helpful.

3. Production Equipment

Over the next week or so I'll be setting up our production pkg server for the /dev and /legacy branch.

I'll also set up an area similar to dlc.sun.com for static downloads, such as the ISO. I'll arrange for this to be fronted by the CDN (Content Delivery Network) we use, as when we launch the ISO downloads will probably suck up huge amounts of bandwidth.

If anyone is able and willing to mirror the content, let me know.

4. Storing our changes in Mercurial

We'll need to set up a proper source management procedure/system very soon to manage the work everyone is producing. This is outside my area of expertise, so I'd like someone else to take on this area of responsibility and prescribe a system for us to use.

I've spoken to someone who expressed an interest in this area, so hopefully we can get something set up fairly soon.

5. Announcement Details

I'm going to book a smallish venue and send an announcement hopefully on Tuesday regarding the launch event the following week, and invite the press etc to attend. I'm going to do something pretty similar to Illumos.

I could do with help with the logistics of the launch. We need a video/audio and slides stream onto the internet - I have a camcorder but it can't live stream. Does anyone have something that can do this, or expertise in this area? Please let me know.

It would also be good to provide people with CDs they can take away from the conference to try, which are properly manufactured rather than burned on CDRs. Does anyone know roughly how much it would cost for a small run (100 to 500) to be pressed, or anywhere to get this done in London/The UK?

Lastly if anyone has anything to add regarding the above, please do!

Cheers,

Alasdair
