Use 'pmap -x' on the X server process ID to see how the memory is 
being used.

The normal case is that images get loaded into the server so that they 
can be refreshed quickly.   This is not entirely a bad thing since at 
least the memory is in a shared place (rather than hogged by a bunch 
of individual applications).
