Nope, it's nothing weird, just a faulty recollection of how I did
my testing several years ago.  I realize now that the two sendmail
processes only communicate with eachother through SMTP.

The files in the server queue must have been left there by a previous
sendmail run in which the authentication failed.  I was testing two
executables, one of which was not built with SASL libraries.
