Thanks for the commentary and citings.
Not sure if it means much but I do not think the xw8600 series is
considered a proLiant product.
A quicky google didn't turn up a date of the HP proliant servers coming
on the market.
HP took over compaq sometime in 2001. But not sure when HP adopted the
formerly Compaq brand Proliant
I was able to download the newest bios for HP xw8600 with no problems on
HP web pages. Although it turned out to be be the same version already
installed on my server.
I'm more concerned to hear from someone about running these big 3TB
discs. Like if the fact they are not supported by the hardware will
mean some nasty data loss somewhere along the line. Or if I would be
better served to switch to 2 GB and make the necessary changes to
hookup more discs to get the same or greater capacity.
Also I'd like to here some commentary about what the boot up error
messages might mean... I'm pretty sure they are related to the 3 TB
discs since I never saw them before installing those 3 TB discs.
Several hundred lines of this format:
[...]
read 225 from 5860511486 to 0xce8c5a60, error: 0x1
[...]
But once booted the HP xw8600 seems to run fine and the zpool that hold
the 3 TB discs in a paired mirror config report all is well:
