I have an OI 151a7 system that for some reason NEVER EVER could be updated.

I have tried, following lots of ideas from lots of people on this list,
but to absolutely no avail.

So, I have come to a point where I absolutely need to run smartmontools
to avoid problems, and smartctl fails.

I installed smartmontools version 6.5 from a tar ball, and it seems to
run, but using it fails.

What could be wrong??? does this indicate a sw error or something broken
in the SATA interfaces??

1. It seems to partially work:
hans at klaus%167%13:28> pfexec ./smartctl -a -P show /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0
smartctl 6.4 2015-06-04 r4109 [i386-pc-solaris2.12] (local build)

Drive found in smartmontools Database. Drive identity strings:

FIRMWARE: SN06
match smartmontools Drive Database entry:

FIRMWARE REGEXP: .*
MODEL FAMILY: Seagate Constellation ES.3
ATTRIBUTE OPTIONS: None preset; no -v options are required.

2. trying to look at any smart test results won't work
hans at klaus%168%13:33> pfexec ./smartctl -a /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0
