[OpenIndiana-discuss] How to install MATE or Gnome Desktop?

My VirtualBox version is:

$ VBoxManage --version
6.1.16r140961

And:

# pkg update
           Packages to install:  12
            Packages to update: 387
            Packages to change:   6
           Mediators to change:   3
       Create boot environment: Yes
Create backup boot environment:  No

A clone of openindiana-2021:01:29 exists and has been updated and activated.
On the next boot the Boot Environment openindiana-2021:02:11-1 will be
mounted on '/'.  Reboot when ready to switch to this updated BE.

I can't reproduce your error.
Two shots in the dark:
In the guest:
# pkg update
# init 6

On the host,
VBoxManage --version
If not the latest, upgrade.
