I believe I have reproduced your results under unsupported VBox 5.2.44.

lightdm displays the username/password prompt but upon loggin in, the
screen goes black within VM window but is normal in VirtualBox Manager's
preview.

Also the display is fine when the guest is paused.

Try upgrading your VirtualBox to 6.1.18.
