It has been 64-bit ready since 1995.

At the time (and even now), most apps did not benefit from 64-bit, 
although they consumed more memory and disk space.  It was only when 
AMD introduced its AMD64 architecture that apps not requiring a huge 
data-set might benefit from 64-bit.
