I did love the referral to Linux as an "obvious cesspool". :-)
FreeBSD (as well as the other BSDs) and Illumos have the advantage
that their foundation is a complete bootable operating system, most of
which has been well integrated for many tens of years (even before
Linux was born). This is not true for Linux, which is an operating
system kernel. Only by adding a lot of other software (or something
like an integration with Busybox) does one get a system which boots
and allows a user to log in. There is a substantial disagreement
regarding about the "other software" to use to turn Linux into an
operating system.
The world of the Linux kernel is organized chaos. There are many code
submissions but just a few people are calling the shots. There are a
rather similar number of decision-makers at the top of the Linux
kernel feeding chain as there are for FreeBSD and Illumos but
contributors to Linux are far less powerful (except unless they are a
huge company like Samsung rather than an actual person).

It is really necessary to look at each use case to see where "Linux
rocks" or some other solution is better.
