That's true.   Maybe the doc could be rephrased.

Also describing Network Auto-Magic (NWAM) as a new approach is not entirely up to date in 2022.

Anyway http://docs.openindiana.org/handbook/systems-administration/#configuring-networking
is a valuable doc.

It could indicate that NWAM has proven itself over the years as a good or best choice for servers.
