Hi Russell!

We should investigate what is happening first.

The first thing that comes to my mind, is that X fails to start.

What error messages are in /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

Or, did you try starting X manually? I think i use "startx" and then 
"pkill twm" inside the xterm and then "mate-session" in these cases... 
to get a full-featured desktop.
