Hi Russell!

I can confirm this behavior on my machine with nvidia-515:

$ /usr/lib/xscreensaver/hacks/glhanoi
glhanoi: unable to allocate memory for floor display list

The other programs in directory hacks don't show an error, but only show 
a black window, no content :-/

BTW, do you use 30bit color depth, 10bit per color RGB?

$ grep -i depth /var/log/Xorg.0.log
[    67.312] (**) NVIDIA(0): Depth 30, (--) framebuffer bpp 32
