This can happen when you have previous pool little bit “shifted” on disk, so you can read out (some) old pool labels. Typical case with FreeBSD is that pool was created on partitionless disk. Destroyed pool shouldn’t cause much grief, as the fact itself is recorded in pool labels (so you can still recover from accidental destroy), but if the original pool was exported or just left on disk as is, then there is high chance of creating mess. zpool destroy, zpool labelclear and zpool initialize are your friends in such case, but if you do have new data already on disk and want to make sure it is preserved, then more careful approach is needed.
