I kind of dropped the ball on my end.  I ended up destroying vm with
io on it for other reasons, but in the course of reinstalling to vm I
am no longer seeing the problem mentioned in this thread.

Again, thank you the helpful posts are not being wasted and several of
the suggestions are put into practice on the new io vm.
