I know you know about AUDIODEV environment variable, but I doubt that will
be helpful here.

Does 'pactl list' (run as yourself, not root/pfexec/sudo) show both audio
sinks?  Does using get-default-sink and set-default-sink make any
difference?

It has been literal years, but I remember having the same problem on my
OI desktop and I think I solved it with pactl, but I don't appear to have
kept notes on that.
