For some applications, but not all. That will catch the built-in audio
utilities,
anything using gstreamer, possibly other audio platforms. There's a whole
slew of applications out in the wild that simply open() /dev/audio and
write to
it. And that environment variable doesn't necessarily translate to the
audioctl
or dsp devices.
