domainname is one of those commands that often is just a trap for the
unwary.
It originally related to *NIS* (called Yellow Pages, back in the day),
and had nothing to do with DNS.
Now, some Linux systems have "adopted" it for use with DNS too, but that's
not something that is true of all systems, especially a system that has
such a strong history with NIS as OI.
If you want to set the domain portion of your DNS fully-qualified name,
then on OI, you can pretty much ignore 'domainname'.
By default, your system is probably using the "Network Auto-Magic Daemon",
aka NWAM. If you're familiar with recent Linux, it's similar in theory
to Linux's NetworkManager subsystem.
There is documentation in the wiki for using and configuring NWAM, and
there's also documentation for how to disable NWAM and go back to the
old static config.
