Look for "nested virtualization"
Never done it on illumos but vanilla virtualbox supports it

I wondered if that might be an issue.

Apparently it is.

I really didn't want to try it on my actual hardware, a little worried
about making a mess of my existing VMs on it.

I guess I will have to brave up and try it or go to an older version
of Oracles releases.
